Insurance Follows the Car in South Carolina

If you're loaning your car to someone, keep in mind you're also loaning your South Carolina auto insurance as well.  So if you let someone else borrow your car and take it for a drive and they get into an accident, your insurance is going to be the one that is responsible.  Therefore, If you have increase or adjustment based on that incident or accident, you’re going to be the one that’s responsible for that.

So, before lending your car to someone, keep in mind:

  1. Always keep your proof of insurance and registration in the car.
  2. Check to see if your friend has a drivers’ license and car insurance themselves.
  3. Check your insurance policy for any specifics that may relate to giving someone permission to drive your vehicle.
