History Of The Overbrook Community In Greenville, SC
The neighborhood of Overbrook started with the growth of the Greenville trolley line. The trolley line was extended in 1910 to its new terminus on the outskirts of the city, an area that ended up being referred to as Overbrook. In 1913, a group of entrepreneurs responded to the growth of the city by acknowledging a need for middle-class housing which could be supported by the trolley line growth. These business people, called the Overbrook Land Company, were arranged by the Woodside bros of Greenville. The Woodsides gained fortune from the Woodside Cotton Mill which was at one point the biggest fabric plant on the planet. The earliest sibling, John T. Woodside was most involved with Overbrook.
In 1913, the siblings acquired land on the eastern edge of Greenville from Asa A. Green for $7,500. In September of that year, the location was surveyed and partitioned by designer H. Olin Jones. 2 years later a portion of the land was offered to R.J. Rowley, a farmer. Rowley was most likely the designer of the very first section of Overbrook. This location is controlled by Craftsman Cottage houses which were popular during that age. Rowley offered land to the Worker and Leigh real estate firm which sold to specific purchasers. Property owners were predominately white-collar specialists.
R.E. Dalton surveyed another part of Overbrook in 1917 and by 1922 Overbrook Circle had actually been subdivided. By 1924 the community was totally developed. This location was established by Franklin Smith for "well-off" business owners and experts and, therefore, both lots and houses were larger.
